Aromatherapy has been used since ancient times, the Egyptians distilled and extracted oils from plants. The Chinese infused aromatic oils to enhance the mood and the Greeks claimed their gods understood the importance of fragrance and perfumes and this resulted in the development of practices to promote and realise the benefits associated with plant oils.
The actual term "aromatherapy" was derived in 1937 when a French chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse introduced the word following a burn incident, which encouraged his curiosity to investigate the healing powers that essential oils could offer. The discovery that lavender oil helped to cure burns, was then used to identify essential oils that could help heal soldiers' wounds in World War II, this proved the medical benefits of aromatherapy.
Essential oils should not be confused with perfumes or other fragrance oils. Essential oils are natural to the plant, whereas fragrance oils are now commonly based on chemical production to mimic certain aromatic scents for perfumes, colognes, candles, etc.
